Gear6 Enhances Memcached as a Service With Dynamic Scaling on Amazon EC2

Gear6 Memcached Updates on Amazon EC2 Introduce Dynamic Services, Security Services, and Cloud API to Extend the Advantages of Memcached in the Cloud

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/23/10 -- Continuing to lead the pace of innovation with Memcached and web scale technologies, Gear6 today introduced three new features to its Gear6 Cloud Cache™ service for Amazon Web Services Elastic Compute Cloud (AWS - EC2):

-- Dynamic Services: For the first time, companies can now run their entire
web stack in the cloud and make full use of its elastic capabilities.
This is possible with Dynamic Services on Gear6 Cloud Cache, which
eliminates a major issue with Memcached -- its inability to maintain
cache data while changing cache capacity, resulting in unnecessary site
degradation or downtime. Gear6 Cloud Cache solves this fundamental
problem with Dynamic Services, enabling servers to grow and shrink
automatically with the needs of the site -- without losing any cache
    data.

-- Security Services: Gear6 Cloud Cache now has four levels of
authentication for access to its Memcached service on EC2. With this
feature cloud operators will be able to share real time cache data with
various authenticated users without having to compromise operational
    control of the cache tier.

-- Cloud API: Gear6 has published a REST-based Cloud API to automate the
deployment and management of Gear6 Memcached resources on EC2. This API
will allow developers to dynamically distribute Memcached resources
where and when they are needed.

Memcached is the key technology used to scale out and increase performance of data driven web sites. However, adding or removing cache capacity frequently leads to unnecessary loss of cache data making the service brittle. This issue prevents users from taking full advantage of the elastic capabilities of cloud environments. By addressing performance problems for web sites that experience sudden and severe fluctuations in traffic, Gear6's new dynamic service enhancements enable Cloud Cache users on EC2 to further leverage inherent cloud advantages. Images for these new services are now being rolled out to existing customers on Amazon, with general availability starting February 28, 2010.

"Cloud customers demand elasticity from their platforms," said Joaquin Ruiz, Executive Vice President of Products at Gear6. "With these killer new features, Gear6 Cloud Cache enables EC2 Memcached services to be super elastic while maintaining cache data and site performance."

Gear6 Cloud Cache is the only commercial-grade Memcached service for EC2. Cloud Cache is based on Gear6's enhanced Memcached distribution, which has mission-critical features such as advanced memory management, clustering, replication and improved tools for monitoring and reporting. Today's new features address critical adoption issues around elasticity, security and existing management support.

These new features for Cloud Cache are currently available to existing customers on Amazon, and will be made generally available starting February 28, 2010.
