Rackspace and Akamai Cuddle Under the Cloud

The idea is to create a one-stop shop for hosting, cloud and acceleration services for web content and applications

Amazon wannabe Rackspace Hosting has cut a "strategic" deal to incorporate Akamai's web acceleration and cloud optimization widgetry in its dedicated and cloud hosting products.

It's supposed to integrate Akamai's CNAMEs load balancing, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption and CDN delivery with its S3-competitive Cloud Files online storage and resell Akamai site and application acceleration services to its customers beginning next quarter.

The idea is to create a one-stop shop for hosting, cloud and acceleration services for web content and applications.

Akamai's got 77,000 servers in 71 countries that can be leveraged to reduce latency and provide high availability in the cloud.

Akamai widgetry in Rackspace's product portfolio is supposed to address the challenges that companies face in moving to the cloud or hosted environments, namely, latency, availability, scalability and security.

Rackspace should eventually have Akamai solutions as add-ons or an embedded suite of services in its other dedicated, cloud and hybrid hosting offering.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
